The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is clearly one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in American history. Designed to combat the widespread defiance of the 15th Amendment’s prohibition of racial discrimination and the right to vote, the VRA expanded minority participation and representation in American politics. However, the VRA faces an uncertain future, as the Supreme Court has been asked in Louisiana v. Callais to strike its remaining provisions. In this panel, SGPP Professors Tessa Provins and Chad Westerland will discuss the history and impact of the VRA and the current litigation that has questioned its constitutionality. They will also explore the potential consequences of Louisiana v. Callais for the future of electoral politics in the US.
