The Oro Valley Police Department's (OVPD) College Academy is a 40-hour immersive program designed to provide participants with a realistic understanding of modern policing. Participants gain practical insights into the criminal justice system through hands-on activities, scenario-based learning, and direct interaction with department personnel.
Program Highlights
- Core Skills: Leadership, communication, decision-making, and physical fitness
- Specialized Units: K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Digital Forensics, Drone Operations, and Hostage Negotiations
- Department Functions: Patrol, Criminal Investigations, DUI Enforcement, Communications, and Property & Evidence
- Practical Experience: Mock oral boards, integrity scenarios, wellness discussions, and court tours

Internship Credit & Waiver
Criminal Justice (CJS) & Public Affairs (PAF) majors are eligible to participate in the academy and receive an internship waiver.
CJS & PAF students participating to receive academic credit to satisfy degree requirements are required to complete the following:
- Participate in the five-day academy (all classes MUST be attended to earn internship waiver; no exceptions will be made under any circumstances)
- Upon completion of the academy and confirmation by OVPD, students will complete a questionnaire provided by the Internship Coordinator to reflect on the experience
- After completing the questionnaire, students will receive an internship waiver two weeks after submission, allowing them to complete a major home-department elective to satisfy the Internship course requirement for their specific major.
Important Requirements
- Participants must attend the full five-day academy training.
- Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- Completing this form does not guarantee placement in the program.
Selection Considerations - Preference given to CJS & PAF Majors
Since this academy is designed to provide exposure to the realities of modern policing and law enforcement careers, priority consideration will be given to students who are actively interested in pursuing careers in policing, public safety, law enforcement, investigations, or related criminal justice professions.
As part of the application process, students will be asked to describe how participation in the academy aligns with their academic and career interests.

The Internship Coordinator will review applications and notify those who will be selected to participate by November 13 . The Internship Coordinator will consider the quality of written responses and the resume; as such, the use of AI is not encouraged when completing the application.
